Don’t get me wrong, I love caffeine as much as the next person. In a world where it’s difficult to keep up with even the smallest of tasks, never mind throwing in work, home, school, kids, pets and trying to have a social life, I get how easy it is to rely on our trusty-old friend caffeine. I mean, it’s available on any street corner and even just down the hallway from your desk. This week, I challenge you to try something different. Variety is the spice of life, right? Instead of a java jolt, try one or all of the following. You may be pleasantly surprised.
Instead of caffeine, Wake up your mind. Sometimes it takes awhile to get your mind going in the morning. Try waking up by reading the news or doing a crossword puzzle. Sudoku perhaps?
Instead of caffeine, Get away from your desk. Hours upon hours of sitting at your desk can start to sap your energy and make you plead for it to be 5 o’clock already. Give yourself a quick pick-me-up by stepping away from your desk for a bit for a trip to the water fountain (or ‘bubblah’ if you are from RI), a walk around the office or just a short break.
Instead of caffeine, Drink enough water. Because your body is mostly composed of water, it makes sense that you need to get enough in order to function at your peak. Try to drink the standard 8 glasses a day to keep your brain and body in tip top shape.
Instead of caffeine, Eat smaller, more frequent meals. Medical experts agree that infrequent eating can cause your blood glucose to spike and crash, leaving you tired and hungry. And digesting huge meals can steal energy you need for other things. Instead, eat smaller meals throughout the day so you can keep your energy level and keep yourself feeling great.
Instead of caffeine, Avoid excess sugar. Sugar may be tasty, but it can also cause your energy levels to bottom out after it’s been digested. Avoid eating super sugary foods when you need to be at your peak energy levels.
Instead of caffeine, Indulge yourself. Giving into your cravings, enjoying a nice long bath, or simply relaxing on your patio can help refresh you and give you the energy to keep going.
Instead of caffeine, Call a friend. What better way to wake up than by interacting with those you care most about? Give a friend or a family member a call to see what they’ve been up to.

Kristen Lutz, a Nationally Certified Licensed Massage Therapist, is a graduate of Cortiva Institute – Boston (formerly Muscular Therapy Institute) in Watertown, MA. As a member of the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) and Massachusetts Chapter of the AMTA, her work is centered upon supporting clients in achieving optimal health and well being through listening and understanding individual needs . She integrates various massage techniques into each personalized session. These techniques include Swedish (relaxation), deep tissue, sports massage, orthopedic massage, neuromuscular (trigger point) therapy, and myofascial release along with stretching, range of motion, and breath work. She is currently training to be certified in Advanced Orthopedic Massage. Having completed the Usui Method Reiki II Certification, clients can benefit from the integration of energy work and balancing along with massage therapy.
Clients benefit from Kristen’s approach that each client is unique and no one treatment is alike. This customized approach leads to a more effective treatment. Kristen, a New England native, has been living in Boston for the past seven years. She graduated with a B.S. in Exercise and Sport Sciences from Colby-Sawyer College in New London, NH while playing collegiate women’s volleyball. She continued with her education and graduated with a M.S. in Clinical Exercise Physiology from Northeastern University in Boston, MA and has worked in the health and wellness field as an exercise physiologist.
