An interview with Sara Packard, RYT
From the desk of Sara Packard, RYT…
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PRACTICING YOGA?
I have been practicing yoga on and off for 10 years, but really consistently the past 5 years. I started, like most people, going to the classes at my local gym which sparked my interest but my journey truly began while I was working as an actress in NYC. I was looking for an outlet both physically and mentally for the stress that accompanied the life of an actor!
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TEACHING YOGA?
I have been teaching since 2009. While I was living in Sacramento, CA I walked into a place called Zuda yoga and that’s where I found my yoga "heart". I enrolled in their 200 hour teaching training and began working with my teachers Anne Marie Kramer and Bill Prysock. After graduation my husband and I moved back to NYC where I began teaching for New York Yoga and Crunch Fitness. I'm now here in Boston spreading the yoga love!
WHAT INSPIRES YOUR PERSONAL PRACTICE?
I keep showing up on my mat because every time there is something new to learn and to connect with. Even though at this point the poses are quite familiar, the moments in each pose are always different from the last. Learning to breathe into each moment has been such a gift for both my practice on the mat as well as off the mat.
ON TOUGH DAYS, WHAT'S YOUR MANTRA?
"You are exactly where you are supposed to be" and one of the simplest mantras of all, but so important; "Breathe in, breathe out"
WHAT DIFFERENTIATES THE EXPERIENCE OF A YOGA CLASS AND A YOGA PRIVATE SESSION?
The biggest difference is the most obvious; in a class you are one of few or many which can be wonderful because it inspires and encourages that sense of community and serves as a reminder that we are not in it alone. There is support in a class through other peoples bodies, breath and energy. A private session is also fantastic because it offers us the opportunity to connect to the things we really need to focus on the most. When I work with a private client I love that we get to tailor the practice that day to exactly what it is they need, while in class I try to generally make that happen, but of course is a bit more difficult. That being said both are so valuable!!
