Acupuncture for Stress Reduction: Part I
From the desk of Jessica L. Molleur, Lic.Ac., DNBAO...
Could it be possible? Christmas decorations in store windows? It's true. I was almost tempted to purchase an advent calendar the day after Halloween.
One way or another, the holiday season is approaching. It's a good time to take a moment before the holidays to assess your stress levels and look at the big picture before the new year. Unusually high levels of stress can affect sleep, energy, mental health, as well as almost every system of the body. Eventually, chronic levels of stress over work your endocrine system, taxing your adrenal glands as they are required to produce stress hormones such as cortisol to help your body cope with various types of stress. Is there a way to determine whether your stress level is affecting your health? Score yourself for the following 15 questions below to see how your body is handling stress:
0=I do not experience this symptom 1=Mild 2=Moderate 3=Severe
Sensitivity to chemical smells
Depression, rapid mood swings
Dark circles under the eyes
Lack of mental alertness
Feeling tired but wired
Trouble falling or staying asleep
Feeling of being stressed
Low blood pressure
Feeling of not being rested upon waking
Tendency to startle easily
Tendency to get upset or frustrated easily
Quick to cry
Low tolerance for alcohol, caffeine or other drugs
SCORING: 10 or more: High priority 6-9: Moderate Priority 1-5: Low Priority
Acupuncture is effective for treatment of many mental health concerns, particularly-stress, anxiety disorders, and depression. This an important tool because 60-90% of all health care visits are due to stress-related disorders. Acupuncture is unique in that the effects are long-lasting. Acupuncture causes the release of beta-endorphins and has a sympathetic calming effect. It decreases the heart rate, blood pressure, while increasing energy, and tissue regeneration. Generally, it can relieve feelings of anxiety and depression leaving people with a sense of well-being.
