Organic Skincare

From the desk of Jessica L. Molleur, Lic.Ac., DNBAO...

Last week's blog covered common household chemicals and ten ways to reduce your chemical exposure.  With this post, I want to talk about cosmetics and all the other body care products we use on a daily basis-specifically lipstick.  Well, not just lipstick but the lead found in lipstick.

Yep.  You got it.  Lead in lipstick.  So for all you new parents searching for de-leaded homes, try opening up your medicine cabinet first.  In October 2007, the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics tested more than thirty brands of lipsticks and found that 61% of lipsticks contained lead.  This certainly gives the phrase “hugs and kisses” a whole new spin.

In 2009, following pressure from consumers and a letter from three US Senators, the FDA released a follow-up study that found lead in ALL samples of tested lipstick.   Levels ranged up to four times higher than the levels found in the Campaign study. The FDA found the highest lead levels in lipsticks made by three manufacturers: Procter & Gamble-hello Cover Girl, L'Oreal (L'Oreal, Body Shop and Maybelline brands) and Revlon. Guess what happened next?

Nothing.

That’s right-nothing happened until July 20, 2010.   Representatives Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., Ed Markey, D-Mass., and Tammy Baldwin, D-Wisc., introduced the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2010 (H.R.5786), which gives the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authority to ensure that personal care products are free of harmful ingredients.  Now don’t get too excited, because this was just a small step in the right direction more than seven years ago.  For more information about this bill, go to:  http://www.safecosmetics.org/section.php?id=74.

The good news is that over the past several years, consumers have been demanding more green, organic, and eco-friendly products which has resulted in the green beauty market being flooded with options from lipstick to deodorant to eyeliner and dental floss.  I think that the best news is that many of these products perform better than their not-so-safe-or-green comparisons.

Check out this great video short from our favorite Anne Leonard (aka the woman in the Story of Too Much Stuff) to learn more about the Story of Cosmetics:

What’s a cosmetic junkie to do in the meantime?  You can evaluate almost any item in your cosmetic bag on the Environmental Working Group's website: www.ewg.org. Check out last week's blog for a list of ingredients to avoid.  Please read labels!  Finally, here is a list of some of our favorite companies to get your feet wet in the eco beauty world.

Happy shopping & enjoy!
