Acupuncture and Infertility

From the desk of Jessica L. Molleur, Lic.Ac. DNBAO and Erin Walker, Lic. Ac... We speak with many people about acupuncture; what it is, what it isn't. More specifically, moms-to-be want to know if it's safe and effective as they get closer to having their baby (or babies!). We've picked the three most popular questions and answered them for all to see!

Q: Is acupuncture effective for those trying to conceive or diagnosed infertility?

A: Yes. Acupuncture is effective for those trying to conceive or diagnosed infertility. This is an area of specialty for both of our acupuncturists on staff and is one of the top 10 reasons that OBs/endocrinologists refer to acupuncturists. There are several research studies documenting the beneficial affects of acupuncture for fertility. If you are considering acupuncture for fertility, please schedule as soon as possible so that the acupuncturist can complete your health history, an initial acupuncture session, and assess what will be appropriate in planning for conception.

Q: What about IVF? When should I come in?

A: Yes. Acupuncture has been found to be effective for increasing the pregnancy rates as well as other important statistics such as live birth before and after IVF (in-vitro fertilization). It is one of the top 10 reasons that OBs refer to acupuncturists. If you are considering acupuncture prior to IVF, please schedule as soon as possible so that the acupuncturist can complete your health history, an initial acupuncture session, and assess what will be appropriate in planning for conception.

Q: What if I don’t have a partner? I’m gay? Or I’m having an egg donor/sperm donor? Thinking of adoption?

A: Our acupuncturists see a wide variety of clientele including single women, heterosexual couples, gay/lesbian couples, couples or singles working with a sperm donor, egg donor, or otherwise. In summary, there are many reasons for ultimately needing acupuncture during the process of family planning. We welcome any person or family unit to book an appointment.

We recommend that if you have any specific questions about your health history that you speak with the acupuncturist directly or schedule a 30 minute consult to do so at OMBE. You can easily book online or call 617.447.2222.
