Produce Number Decoder
From the desk of Stacey Nussbaum, HHC... In the grocery store, you can learn a lot about your produce by the stickers they wear. Those little stickers tell you how your fruits and vegetables were grown and also whether they're genetically modified (GMO). When you buy your produce directly from your local farmer or at a farmers markets, you won't find stickers but you can and should certainly ask your farmer how the produce was grown and whether it's GMO.
Back at the grocery store, the best sticker for your produce to wear is one with five numbers, starting with the number 9. That means your produce was grown organically, free of pesticides and chemicals and non-GMO. Why is that the best for you? For starters, it's better for your health and they are produced and grown in ways that support a healthy environment. There's a significant difference in the nutritional value of organic foods when compared to conventionally grown produce. Some studies show that organic crops had higher nutrient levels or lower levels of toxicity in 56% of the cases.
So if your apple has a sticker with four numbers, it was grown conventionally. What's that mean? It means your apple grew on a tree with the help of pesticides and other chemical fertilizers to prevent bugs and aid unnaturally in the apple's growth. When you eat a conventional apple, you're actually consuming the pesticides and harmful chemicals used to help it grow! And yes this is the case even if you peel the skin off.
When your corn has a sticker with five numbers starting with an 8, it was genetically modified. That simply means your corn's DNA was altered. Most GMO crops are designed to either survive exposure to certain herbicide or to kill certain insects. Do you want to eat something that is indestructible when put up against chemicals and insects? How will your body break it down?? I highly recommend avoiding any and all GMO foods! The problem is that there is no requirement to label foods as GMO so the best route to go is with organic produce since they are not GMO.
Stay tuned for more on GMOs in my next blog post!
