Happy Earth Day: How To Improve Your Water Quality

From the desk of Jessica L. Molleur, Lic.Ac., DNBAO...

In honor of Earth Day, celebrated on April 22nd in the United States, I thought I would discuss one of the most important but sometimes overlooked way to reduce your chemical exposure in your household.  There have been many studies published about various toxins found at unsafe levels in drinking levels in several states in the United States.  These chemicals have been linked to cancer, hormone disruption as well as many other health conditions.  You can just touch the surface on this vast topic by reading a relatively recent article in the Harvard Gazette.    If you or anyone spends anytime on Cape Cod during the summer, you may also be interested in reading about Cape Cod's drinking water problem.  Health advisories have been issues at various stages due to known, unsafe levels of PFOA and PFOS.  In essence, the drinking water on the Cape was found to be unsafe for pregnant or nursing mothers as well as babies due to potential developmental issues arising from the ingestion of these chemicals.  In addition to the known risks of certain chemicals at unsafe levels, there are numerous concerns about the complex interaction of hundreds or thousands of chemicals found in the water even when found in allowable levels as determined by the Environmental Protection Area.

What can you do?  First you need to find out what is in your water by having it tested.  Not all companies are the same when it comes to testing the water.  Be wary of companies that also sell water filters as this is a conflict of interest. One company that offers various types of water tests is National Testing Laboratories.  Tests average about $250 depending on the extensiveness of the test and the number of areas you want to test in your home.  The next step is to determine what type of filter you need to purchase in order to filter out whatever contaminants are found in your water test.  For an extremely comprehensive look at all the various issues that affect our drinking water today, as well as an unbiased and thorough review of available water filters, order a copy of the The Drinking Water Book by Colin Ingram.  This is probably one of the best resources that I have found on the subject of water and the best $15 I have spent.  Don't forget other areas of your household such as showers, baths, or outdoor hoses.  Good luck testing!
