More About Sports Medicine Acupuncture & Integrative Medicine

Integrative medicine and acupuncture is an effective treatment tool for many common musculoskeletal conditions, chronic pain, and overtraining injuries. Additionally, the combination of these modalities including nutritional counseling, mind body techniques, as well as acupuncture can be used to prevent overuse injuries, increase athletic performance, and decrease recovery time between major athletic events. Patients have found acupuncture to be an important tool for the treatment of a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions including achilles tendonitis, bursitis, carpal tunnel syndrome, concussions and traumatic brain injuries, knee osteoarthritis, migraines, plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff injuries, as well as shin splints and lower leg injuries.

Acupuncture is also an extremely effective, non-invasive modality for the treatment of spine injuries, degenerative disc disease, and conditions causing neck and back pain. Athletes have found integrative medicine including acupuncture to be helpful in reducing the severity and duration of symptoms associated with traumatic head injuries and post concussion syndrome. Modern research has also demonstrated acupuncture's positive effect on the cardiovascular, digestive, endocrine, immune, and nervous systems of the body.

Acupuncture researchers focusing on orthopedic conditions and chronic pain theorize that acupuncture may relieve pain by increasing endorphin levels and blood flow, while reducing inflammation and muscle spasm. Researchers using CT scans and MRI imaging have also discovered that the stimulation of specific acupuncture points elicit specific brain responses in regions associated with the corresponding medical indication and therapeutic effect. At OMBE, we incorporate a multidisciplinary approach to chronic pain management, injury rehabilitation, and improving athletic performance.
