Bone Broth = Liquid Gold!
The broth or the liquid you get after boiling animal bones is what I’m talking about. It is also referred to as stock. And in my home, we call it liquid gold because of its endless healing properties and delicious taste. I always have jars of stock in my freezer and everyone knows when it’s stock-making day because I take over the kitchen! The best part about setting out to make this stuff is it’s essentially free to make. You don’t really have to go out and buy anything new, you just need to save some ingredients (or scraps) and voila, you have liquid gold.
What I do is collect bones from any roasted chickens and freeze them and I collect vegetable scraps during the course of the week in a bowl in my fridge. When I have enough bones and vegetables is when I make a batch of stock. But the true key to good stock is the healthy bones from clean animals and my secret ingredient is chicken feet. You need to go out and buy the feet and they contain the most gelatin and help make the stock thick, nutrient dense and have a Jell-O like consistency.
Gelatin is what helps make your skin, hair and nails grow and look amazing. And your gut will thank you for adding stock to your diet since gelatin has also been shown to improve many digestive disorders.
Bone broth is also loaded with glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). You don’t have to look that up or even try to pronounce it. Just know that one of the most well-known GAGs is glucosamine. And I know you or someone you know is taking that in supplement form for joint health. Tell them to stop wasting money on those supplements and get it from home-made bone broth!
“The health of your joints depends upon the health of the collagen in your ligaments, tendons, and on the ends of your bones. Collagens are a large family of biomolecules, which include the glycosaminoglycans, very special molecules that help keep our joints healthy.” Deep Nutrition by Dr. Cate Shanahan
