Acupuncture for Stress Reduction: Part II

From the desk of Jessica L. Molleur, Lic.Ac., DNBAO...

I am always amazed by the long list of varied and sometime complex conditions for which patients seek out acupuncture.  I am equally amazed by the one common complaint that so many people seem to talk about every week: high stress levels.  Many times patients no longer need to see me for their initial complaint but they decide to continue with acupuncture because they find that their sense of well-being is restored and they experience less anxiety and feelings of stress despite the fact that their every day stressors still exist.  This is a great time of year to benefit from a little extra stress reduction and acupuncture is just one of many tools that you can use.  If you're interested in rating your stress levels, check out last week's post.

Acupuncture is effective for treatment of many mental health concerns, particularly-stress, anxiety disorders, and depression.  This an important tool because 60-90% of all health care visits are due to stress-related disorders.   Acupuncture is unique in that the effects are long-lasting.  Acupuncture causes the release of beta-endorphins and has a sympathetic calming effect.  It decreases the heart rate, blood pressure, while increasing energy, and tissue regeneration.  Generally, it can relieve feelings of anxiety and depression leaving people with a sense of well being.

The best way to understand how acupuncture works for the treatment of stress is to understand the stress response in our bodies.  Stress triggers a series of chemical reactions and physical changes which include the release of neurohormones including cortisol (adrenal cortex) and adrenalin (adrenal medulla).  This is how our sympathetic nervous system responds to everyday stresses-this is our “fight or flight” coping mechanism.   This response can be a healthy reaction to an everyday phenomenon such as our immune system mounting a defense against a virus.  However, chronic, out of proportion stress responses result in pathological changes in the body.  Stress leads to an increased heart rate, increased breath rate, hyperglycemia, increased blood pressure, and muscle tension.  Eventually stress can cause mental strain, anxiety, insomnia, exhaustion, palpitations and even pain.  The body can somatize stress in the form of headaches, backaches, skin disorders or gastrointestinal disorders.
