Weighty Issues

From the desk of Dr. Jacqueline S. Rho, ND… WEIGHT

Have you heard of that controversial children’s book, “Maggie goes on a diet” by Paul Kramer.  Many are wondering if he is sending out the wrong message.  Is this going to lead to a marked increase in eating disorders in our young population?  It is true that more and more children are becoming overweight or obese, and more and more are developing diabetes.  It is true that more and more children are developing eating disorders and are developing them at a younger age.  How do we send out the right message, the right way?  How do we improve the health of children without leading them towards an eating disorder?   The focus should not be on weight, but health and prevention.  I strongly believe in educating children about healthy habits.  I make an effort to not use the word “diet” and focus on improving their health and preventing the onset of disease, like diabetes.  When I have a patient who is young and still growing, the focus is not on weight loss.  I focus on what is causing the weight gain.  Whether it be emotional stress or just not knowing what to eat, the focus is always on treating the root cause.  When the root cause is treated, the weight goes away on its own.
…what about adults?
Obesity, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, heart disease, polycystic ovarian syndrome, cancer, back pain, menopause, hypothyroidism, erectile dysfunction, and so on.  What do all of these have in common?  They are all related to excess weight.  Inability to lose weight and maintain a healthy body weight can be due to several factors.  Food sensitivities and allergies can cause chronic inflammation in the body, causing increased stressed levels, which in turn lead to blood sugar imbalances and weight gain.  Hormonal imbalances, whether it is involving the thyroid or sex hormones, greatly influence one’s tendency to store fat and can be present even if blood tests say everything is normal.  A stressful work/home/school environment can overwork the adrenal glands, which can lead to fatigue and a slower metabolism, thus weight gain.  Not to mention, when one is fatigued the desire to exercise is absent.  Inadequate sleep can hinder one from losing weight.  Toxicity and an overburdened liver can also.  As you can see, there are many different factors involved.  It might not be just one factor, but several combined.  It is my job to identify what the root cause is, treat the root cause, and help the body bring itself back into balance.  When the body is in balance, the weight will come off.
